Mangrove swamps not only protect shorelines and boats from storm surge and waves by absorbing much of their energy but they also absorb and store carbon from the atmosphere. When they die, the carbon stored in their branches falls to the sea floor and becomes buried in the soil. Trapped here it doesn’t re-enter the atmosphere if it remains undisturbed. It is estimated that this C02 depository can hold up to four times what rainforests can, making their survival critical to the planet’s survival against climate crisis.
